Source of the Names

The author of the A Song of Ice and Fire books and their spin offs coined several names for the Targaryen dynasty + several other "Valyrian" names.

Additionally, when the Game of Thrones was first in production, the team approached an expert linguist to flesh out the Targaryen langauge "High Valyrian". That expert was David J. Peterson.

This generator is based on both the name Martin created and Peterson's conlang.

Pronunciation Guide

High Valyrian has a lot of familiar sounds from English, but there are a few sounds that are either absent in High Valyrian (outside of loan words) or unfamilar to an English speaker.

Gh = is a rough, throaty sound—kind of like a hard "h".

J = in isolation, is typically like the j in "jam". But can be pronounced either as y in "yellow" or g in "genre" when occuring in consonant clusters.

Ly = said like the lli in "million"

Ny / Ñ = said sort of like the ni in "onion"

Rh = is sort of like saying h and r at the same time

Y = said like the y in "yak" when seen before vowels

Y = when alone is a rounded i sound, if you're unsure, say it like i in English

Q = represents a uvular stop, you can substitute this with a k sound if it's hard to say

Kh = said like ch, think the sound in "blech!"

Th = is always like th in "thin"

Note: High Valyrian does not have a f sound. So names like "Joffrey" (son of Rhaenyra) would be said as "JOV-REY"
